As highlighted by Metlab Heat Treat in their article “Carburizing,” carburizing—also known as case hardening—is a vital heat treatment process that enhances the surface hardness and wear resistance of steel components while maintaining the core’s toughness and strength. This technique is widely used to improve the performance of critical parts like gears, bearings, and other complex-shaped components.
Carburizing works by diffusing carbon into the surface layer of low carbon steel or high alloy steel parts after machining. This creates a hardened “case” while preserving a softer, more ductile core. The result is a part that is highly wear-resistant on the outside but retains impact resistance and structural integrity inside—ideal for heavy-duty and precision applications.
