Enhance Metal Durability: Advanced Surface Treatment Techniques

As described by the International Labour Organization in their article “Surface Treatment of Metals,” there is a wide variety of techniques available for finishing the surfaces of metal products to resist corrosion, fit better, and look more appealing. These techniques often require thorough cleaning of the metal products before application, using methods such as mechanical grinding, brushing, polishing, vapor degreasing, and pickling in acid or alkaline solutions. Electrolytic degreasing is also common, resulting in clean, oxide-free metal surfaces.

Several key treatment processes include:

Electrolytic Polishing Electrolytic polishing enhances surface appearance and reflectivity, removes excess metal for accurate fitting, and prepares surfaces for inspection. The process involves anodic dissolution of high spots on the surface after degreasing and cleaning. Acidic electrolyte solutions are used, followed by adequate rinsing.

Electroplating Electroplating applies a metallic layer to protect against corrosion or enhance surface properties. The product, wired as the cathode, and an anode of the metal to be deposited are immersed in an electrolyte solution. Direct current drives the process, depositing a thin metallic layer on the product. Electroforming and anodization are related processes, with anodization creating an oxide layer on aluminum for enhanced surface properties.

Enamels and Glazes Vitreous enamel or porcelain enamel provides heat, stain, and corrosion resistance to metals. This process involves smelting raw materials into enamel powder, which is then applied to metal products through wet or dry processes, spraying, or hand application for decorative purposes.

These advanced surface treatment techniques ensure high-quality, durable, and aesthetically pleasing metal products. By employing state-of-the-art methods, solutions that meet the rigorous demands of various industries are offered.
