Strengthen Steel for Industrial Use with These Heat Treatments

As outlined in LinkedIn article, “The 3 Most Common Steel Hardening Heat Treatments & Applications,” heat treatment is a core process in transforming the mechanical properties of steel. Used extensively in industrial settings, steel hardening is primarily accomplished through one of three methods: case hardening, through hardening, and induction hardening—each serving distinct performance needs.

Case Hardening

This process focuses on hardening only the exterior “case” of a steel component while maintaining a softer, more ductile core. By introducing carbon or nitrogen to the surface layer and then heating it rapidly, a hardened martensitic shell forms. This is ideal for parts like tools, automotive components, and cooking utensils that require wear resistance on the outside but still benefit from internal toughness. However, case hardening can make surfaces brittle, which is why post-process tempering is sometimes used.

Industries Served

FORGING

FORGING INDUSTRY COATINGS

Advanced Technical Products' coatings can endure the intense heat the forging process requires. Oxy-Shield Coatings are advanced, water-based, non-hazardous and cost effective metal and graphite protection systems. They are formulated to protect metals and alloys from oxidizing or contaminating atmospheres at high temperatures for extended times. The coatings prevent the diffusion of gases.

FOUNDRY & CASTING

METAL CASTING INDUSTRY COATINGS

Foundries can be involved in many types of metal materials. One of the number one reasons companies from the Foundry industry choose Advanced Technical Products when they need superior coatings is that we have coatings that can withstand the extreme heat. When producing their metal products, all of our customers want and deserve only the best.

ALUMINUM

ALUMINUM INDUSTRY COATINGS

Companies who work with aluminum require coatings like ours to complete many different projects that come in all shapes and size. For aluminum products our Boron Nitride coatings have non-wetting and release properties for molten aluminum. One of the benefits of this type of coating is that it is cost-effective. This helps us pass along savings to our customers.

REFRACTORY

REFRACTORY INDUSTRY COATINGS

Our Boron Nitride coatings are perfect for resisting the same heat and pressure that refractories resist as well. These coatings have multiple advantages such as, water-based, cost-efficient, custom formulated, excellent for erosion resistance, etc. When it involves refractory metals, Advanced Technical Products has the expertise to complete the small and largescale coating projects.

TITANIUM

TITANIUM ALLOYS

ATP has formulated a variety of glass coatings that insulate, protect, and lubricate Titanium alloys at a wide temperature range. ATP coatings control the formation of alpha case, eliminate hydrogen penetration, and provide excellent lubrication during forging and extrusion processes.

NON-FERROUS METALS

NON-FERROUS METAL COATINGS

We work with non-ferrous such as, aluminum, copper, lead, nickel, tin, titanium and zinc, and alloys such as brass. This gives us the ability to provide services such as, High-Temperature Marking Paints & Stencils and Protective Coatings for controlling oxidation and decarburization to most companies in the Non-Ferrous Metals industry.

HEAT TREATING

HEAT TREATING

ATP provides cost effective water-based masking/stop-off coatings for a diverse range of Heat Treating processes including: gas-carburizing, gas-nitriding, carbo-nitriding, and annealing.

AEROSPACE

AEROSPACE

Advanced Technical Products services the aerospace industries in many different ways. From jet engine blades to seat brackets, ATP plays a crucial role in many parts of the airplane. ATP’s coatings aid in the precision forging process by lubricating and protecting the piece during the process. ATP’s coatings help where high-quality and reliable components are required.

WELDING AIDS

WELDING AIDS

ATP’s welding aids were developed in house and are a great welding aid. Our welding aids are water based and can be supplied aerosol cans or mechanical spray bottles. Our welding aids are cost-effective, environmentally friendly and great for many welding operations.
